I also act on breach of confidence and privacy claims, for the times information has already ended up somewhere it should never have been. Where an organisation needs a privacy function rather than a one off answer, I run one for them on a retainer.

Information and technology law is my practice, with privacy and data at its spine. My job is not to stop you. It is to help you build the thing, safely and lawfully, in a way that treats people’s information with the care it deserves.

From 2019 to 2024, I was Head of Legal, Privacy and Data Ethics at BNZ. As BNZ’s Privacy Officer and Data Protection Officer, I advised the Board, Executive Team and business units on privacy compliance, data ethics and the responsible use of information.

I built and led the privacy and data ethics function, oversaw major privacy incidents and regulator engagement, and developed practical systems for privacy governance, individual rights requests and privacy impact assessments.

At Russell McVeagh, I advised on privacy, intellectual property, commercial contracts, regulatory compliance and litigation. My work included GDPR advice, privacy breaches, software and licensing agreements, contract disputes and IPONZ proceedings.

Earlier in my career, I worked on High Court trade mark appeals, trade mark oppositions and revocations, brand protection, counterfeiting investigations, domain name disputes and international trade mark portfolios.

With Clyde & Co in Dubai, and Bird & Bird and Slaughter and May in London, I worked on major patent, trade mark and copyright disputes, including interim injunctions, validity, infringement, entitlement, enforcement strategy and settlement.

That combination of specialist practice, in-house leadership, disputes and international experience helps me see both the legal detail and the practical route to a sound decision.
